Definitions
Purpose of the Directory
The primary purpose of the Directory is to make information on Caribbean regional civil society organizations available to institutions in the public, private, and civil society sectors, particularly those institutions that need to interact with civil society organizations within their spheres of operation. The structure of the Directory will evolve over time, enabling integration into national and regional program implementation modalities as practicable.
Definitions
Civil Society: The associations of citizens (outside their families, friends and businesses) entered into voluntarily to advance their interests, ideas and ideologies. The term does not include profit-making activity (the private sector) or governing (the public sector) (UN Panel of Eminent Persons, 2004, p. 13). The definition includes organizations such as trade unions, professional associations, social movements, indigenous people’s organizations, religious and spiritual organizations, academe, and public-benefit non-governmental organizations.
Regional Organization: An organization registered in the Caribbean and having experience, working relationships, projects, or providing technical services in several countries within the Wider Caribbean Region.
Caribbean Civil Society Organization: A civil society organization that is registered in a Caribbean country, and whose main office is located in a Caribbean country.
Extra-regional or International Civil Society Organization: A civil society organization that is registered in a country outside the Caribbean, whose main office is located outside the Caribbean, and who works in countries within and outside the Caribbean.
Regional Program: A program that is not restricted to a single country or a sub-regional group of countries.
Regional Inter-Governmental Arrangement/Processes: Arrangements established by formal agreements (such as charters or treaties) between lawful representatives of states (e.g. Caribbean Forum, Association of Caribbean States, Caribbean Environment Programme, Caribbean Community).
Information Network: Network organized to facilitate information sharing, knowledge management, or technical expertise in support of a specific program.

The Association of Caribbean Historians (ACH) is an independent, non-profit, professional organization devoted to the promotion of Caribbean history from a multidisciplinary, pan-Caribbean perspective, and is the primary association for scholarly and public historians working in the field.
